Moist and Yummy! Chocolate Chip Banana Bread!

Recently I ended up with a bunch of over ripe bananas - I'd bought too many for my daughter and they got ripe before she could eat them. My old standby in banana bread recipes is awesome, but it's so good because it has buttermilk in it, to make it moist. So I went online to try and find a good substitute recipe. I found one on the Food Network site, that worked with a few modifications. We enjoyed it, so I thought I'd share.

Be sure to try toasting a thick slice in the toaster over - it remelts the chocolate chips - YUM YUM YUM!

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
4 very ripe bananas
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup plain unsweetend apple sauce
1 teaspoon cinnamon
dairy/soy free chocolate chips, such as Enjoy Life semi-sweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl combine flour, baking soda and powder, salt. In a large bowl cream together eggs and sugar. Stir in mashed bananas, vanilla, apple sauce, and cinnamon. Stir in flour mixture, a third at a time, until just combined. Add chocolate chips. Divide batter into two 9x5 loaf pans. Bake for about 1 hour or until knife inserted in center comes out clean (minus any gooey melted chocolate!). YUM!

  1. Hi! I too just found out that I have to go on an elimination diet (milk and soy) for breastfeeding. I am a little discouraged and after a very bloody poop diaper I am starting to consider that expensive formula. I am excited I found your page and am hoping to try some of your yummy ideas. If you don't care, I have a few questions, did your baby out grow the allergy and what did you eat for main meals most of the time? I admmit I am a microwave and go kind of gal and a LOT of it contains soy. Even a steam fresh vegatable bag I got out last night had soy in it. What products/brands did you find best. I haven't tried the oat milk but the rice milk is SWEET! If you'd rather e-mail me than post here, my e-mail is Thanks for everything you've already posted!

  2. we have also cut soy and dairy out of our diets as I'm breastfeeding and my daughter is allergic to these things. I tried the banana bread this afternoon without the chocolate chips. I made some for baby (without nuts) and then in the loaf for me and dad i added nuts. we all really enjoyed it. We also tried the oat milk today and it's not bad i have to say not as good as milk but way better then rice milk. Thanks for the great ideas!!!

  3. Just found out I'm soy and lactose intolerant and came across your blog! I added a few more bananas to this and it was SO amazing! Thanks for posting!

  4. Nice job on your blog! :-) I'm dairy-free (due to lactose intolerance and on the advice of my physician not to eat casein) and I'm soy-free (due to out-of-whack hormones); so I'm looking forward to finding more posts on your blog.

    Are you fond of almondmilk?

    1. Hi I'm soy free as well, I get very bad migraines when eaten. Someone said it might be hormones, is this something that happened to you? I am 21 and I have only been soy free for about a year and a half after we finally found that was the source of my headaches. Anything you know would probably be helpful!

  5. Thanks for this post. I also am dairy and soy free because of breastfeeding. (I just can't handle the smell of that nasty formula they wanted to put my son on!) I have been looking everywhere for chocolate chips! Thanks!!

  6. SO glad I ran into your blog! I'm struggling to survive off coconut milk yogurt and Amy's Kitchen frozen meals (which I just learned have Soy *ugh*) I see it has been awhile since you've blogged, but I'm sure thats because you're done breastfeeding. But thanks for this!

  7. Thank you SO much for this! My sister is looking at the same situation that you're in, and we're all trying to find recipes that we can make for her.

  8. So glad I found this blog. I got put on a Soy/dairy free diet this morning for my little girl.

  9. Made this today! LOVE IT, and so does the rest of my family who is on a normal diet.
